The safest two-question rule
1. What broad resin family is this? Use the number as a material clue.
2. Does my current program accept this exact object? Look for the shape—bottle, jug, tub, cup, tray, clamshell, film, foam, lid, pail, or durable product. If it is not listed, do not add it to the bin merely because a triangle appears on it.

Number = resin clue
It identifies a broad plastic category. It does not certify collection, recycled content, food safety, or compostability.
Shape changes the answer
A bottle, tub, film bag, foam tray, tiny cap, and bucket move differently through collection and sorting.
Local rules control
Equipment, contracts, buyers, contamination limits, deposit schemes, and drop-off routes vary.
Do not wish-cycle
An uncertain item can tangle equipment, be removed as residue, or reduce the quality of a recovered material bale.
What do plastic recycling numbers really mean?
The numbers are called resin identification codes, or RICs. ASTM D7611/D7611M covers seven categories: six named resin families and a seventh catch-all group. The system helps identify the main resin in a manufactured plastic article. It does not test whether a community collects the article or whether a commercial recycling system can recover it.
The confusion is understandable. Many older codes appear inside “chasing arrows,” which people read as a recycling promise. ASTM changed the standard symbol toward a solid triangle to separate resin identity from the recycling message. The standard itself says RICs are not recycle codes and should not have a recyclability claim placed next to them.
Read the code as a starting fact: “This is mainly PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, or Other.” You still need information about format, size, color, labels, closures, residue, collection access, sortability, reprocessing, and end-market demand before giving a disposal instruction or making a claim.

“Made from PP” is not the same as “accepted here”
Polypropylene may be used for yogurt tubs, lids, takeaway containers, cups, trays, woven sacks, and durable parts. All may be described broadly as PP, yet their size, geometry, pigments, decoration, attachments, and residue are different.
Honokage states that PP is a principal material for its thin-wall IML food containers. A packaging buyer should still review the complete pack and target recycling stream. A #5 mark on the body does not describe a foil seal, closure, ink, barrier, handle, or spoon.
Plastic numbers 1–7: a realistic recycling guide
This chart shows common patterns, not permission for your address. “Often accepted” usually applies to familiar packaging formats such as bottles and jugs. It should not be expanded to every object made from the same resin.
Why can the same number get a different answer?
Recycling facilities process objects, not abbreviations. The item must be collected, separated, identified, baled, sold, cleaned, reprocessed, and converted into a useful material. A failure at any stage can change the real result.
Collection
A city, private hauler, deposit system, retailer, or regional facility may use a different accepted-items list and contract.
Tamaño y forma
Film can wrap around screens. Tiny parts may fall through. Flat items may travel with paper. Large articles may not fit equipment.
Optical detection
Near-infrared sorting may be affected by carbon-black pigment, large sleeves, heavy print, metallic decoration, or some label constructions.
Complete construction
The body, lid, pump, foil seal, label, ink, adhesive, barrier, pigment, and residue may not behave as one compatible material.
Bale quality
Contamination, mixed polymers, moisture, and unwanted attachments can reduce the quality or value of sorted material.
End market
Technical meltability does not prove that enough material is collected, a commercial reprocessor exists, or a buyer wants the output.

Consumer decision path
Six steps before anything enters the bin
- Name the object: bottle, tub, tray, film, foam, lid, pail, or mixed pack.
- Find the code: use it as a material clue; do not guess if no code appears.
- Check the current list: match both material and exact shape.
- Choose the channel: curbside, deposit, depot, store drop-off, special collection, or trash.
- Prepare it correctly: empty it and follow local rules for residue and components.
- Stop when uncertain: ask the program rather than wish-cycling.
Items that need more than a number
Bottles and jugs
Familiar #1 and #2 formats are often accepted, but product category and residue still matter. A pesticide, pool-chemical, or motor-oil bottle may require different handling.
Tubs, cups, and trays
A yogurt tub, takeaway bowl, clear cup, and meat tray may use familiar resins but differ in thickness, labels, seals, pads, shape, and food residue.
Bags, wraps, and film
Keep loose film out of curbside unless explicitly accepted. Some clean, dry polyethylene film has a store route; many pouches, degradable bags, and dirty films do not.
Espuma
Expanded polystyrene is bulky, breaks easily, and is accepted by few curbside programs. A specialty collection may exist, but #6 does not create that route.
Black plastic
Do not use an absolute yes or no. Traditional carbon black can interfere with NIR detection, while detectable pigments and other sorting systems can change the result.
Pumps and small parts
Pumps, sprayers, straws, and loose caps can contain several polymers, springs, or seals. Small pieces may fall through sorting equipment.
How clean does plastic need to be?
The goal is to remove meaningful food, liquid, or product contamination—not to make the container look new. For locally accepted food packaging, empty it and scrape or rinse away significant residue. EPA describes “spatula-clean” as sufficient for many food containers.
- Empty liquids so they do not soak paper or add contamination.
- Scrape accepted tubs, jars, and trays; rinse quickly when needed.
- Keep eligible store-drop-off film clean and dry.
- Keep recyclables loose unless the program requests bags.
- Use hazardous-waste instructions for chemical residue.
Caps, lids, sleeves, and labels have no universal rule. Follow the wording for your program and actual package. An attached cap may be handled differently from a loose cap, pump, foil membrane, or full-body sleeve.

What happens after collection?
The route varies, but this simple pathway shows why the number is only one input. A plastic item can be lost before reprocessing if its shape, size, color, decoration, residue, or mixed construction sends it into the wrong stream.

Recovered resin may become packaging, fiber, pipe, sheet, lumber, automotive components, or another product. It is not necessarily turned back into the same item. Some closed-loop systems do that, but the outcome depends on quality, contamination controls, approvals, and the buyer for the recycled material.

Recyclable, recycled content, and compostable are different
Reciclable concerns recovery after use under a real system. Recycled content concerns how much recovered material entered the product. One claim does not prove the other.
Compostable concerns breakdown under defined composting conditions and an applicable certification framework. It does not mean the item belongs in plastic recycling or backyard compost.
Honokage states that its recycled-material applications are mainly non-food products such as flower baskets, storage boxes, and household articles. Do not assume recycled resin is automatically suitable for food contact; intended use, material source, regulatory status, and supporting documentation must be reviewed.
Five common number-reading mistakes
Most recycling errors do not come from ignoring the number. They come from asking the number to answer a question it was never designed to answer.
Mistake 1: “#1 or #2 means yes”
The familiar answer usually refers to selected bottles, jugs, and jars. A PET textile, strap, tray, or clamshell and an HDPE bucket, tube, or durable part may not follow the packaging rule. Read the noun after the resin.
Mistake 2: “#4 means store drop-off”
Some polyethylene bags and wraps qualify, but a resin code alone is not a drop-off label. Pouches, degradable bags, prewashed-salad bags, dirty film, and packages with several layers may be excluded. Use the drop-off program’s own list.
Mistake 3: “#7 means one bad plastic”
Other is a catch-all, not a single chemical identity. It may cover an unlisted resin, a multilayer construction, or a combination. It does not prove that an item contains BPA, is compostable, or must always go to trash.
Mistake 4: “Technical recycling means local access”
A laboratory or specialty process may convert a material under controlled conditions. That does not prove households can access the process, the item is sorted into it, commercial volume is adequate, or a stable end market exists.
Mistake 5: “The body represents the pack”
The tub may be PP while its membrane, closure, spoon, label, ink, adhesive, and barrier use other materials. Consumers need realistic component instructions, and brands need evidence for the package as sold—not only the molded body.
For brands: design the complete pack for a real system
Selecting a base resin and adding a number is not a design-for-recycling assessment. Name the country, product category, collection route, and relevant recycler-led design guide. Then review the body, lid, seal, liner, label or IML, sleeve, adhesive, ink, coating, pigment, barrier, handle, attachment, likely residue, size, and shape as one commercial pack.
Start with the target stream
A rigid-PP tub, PET bottle, PE film, returnable crate, and deposit container belong to different sorting and reprocessing conversations.
Make the base resin visible
Evaluate large labels, full sleeves, dark pigment, metallic effects, ink coverage, and optical behavior. Test novel or borderline designs.
Control attachments
Do not treat lids, pumps, foil membranes, pads, handles, and tamper parts as afterthoughts. Confirm compatibility or separation.
Design for emptying
A technically compatible pack can perform poorly if consumers cannot empty it or if normal use leaves heavy residue.
Write realistic instructions
“Empty, replace cap,” “separate sleeve,” or “return clean film” must match actual validation and access in the selling market.
Use change control
A new resin, pigment, label, adhesive, barrier, closure, geometry, site, or supplier can change sortability and claim evidence.

A recyclable claim needs access and evidence
The FTC’s currently published Green Guides summary says marketers should qualify recyclable claims when appropriate facilities are not available to at least 60% of consumers or communities where the item is sold. Lower access calls for stronger limitations.
The overall impression matters: words, a chasing-arrows graphic, placement, and small-print qualifications can create an implied claim. Check current federal guidance and applicable state law before artwork approval.

PPWR generally applies from August 12, 2026
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 now provides an EU-wide packaging framework. Important design-for-recycling criteria, grades, recycled-at-scale requirements, and harmonized labels have later dates and depend on delegated or implementing acts.
A #1–#7 code or generic supplier statement is not proof that a pack meets every PPWR requirement. Confirm the product category, actor role, transition date, technical file, and destination-market rules.

What to send a packaging supplier
A useful recycling review begins with defined inputs, not an “eco-friendly” request. Share the target countries, exact claim and artwork, pack drawing, product and residue, body resin and grade, component weights, lid and seal, label or IML structure, ink, color, barrier, intended disposal route, and any design-guide or test requirements.
Ask for written change notification and project-specific documentation. A supplier letter, resin code, or test on the base body alone may not substantiate the finished package claim.

Frequently asked questions
Which plastic recycling numbers are easiest to recycle?
#1 PET and #2 HDPE bottles and jugs are often among the most widely accepted household plastic formats. No number is universal, and a #1 tray or #2 bucket may not follow the bottle rule. Confirm both resin and object type.
Is #5 polypropylene always recyclable?
No. Programs may accept selected #5 bottles, tubs, cups, or containers and reject other PP articles. Size, shape, color, labels, closures, residue, equipment, and end markets affect the answer.
Can #4 plastic bags go in curbside recycling?
Usually not unless the curbside program explicitly accepts film. Some clean, dry eligible bags and wraps can go to a participating store drop-off. Check that program’s list because many pouches and films are excluded.
Is #7 Other plastic recyclable?
Sometimes, through a program that specifically accepts the identified item or material. #7 can include different resins, multilayers, and mixed constructions. It does not by itself reveal BPA, compostability, or recyclability.
Should caps and lids stay on?
Follow the local program. An attached cap on an accepted bottle may be handled differently from a loose cap, pump, foil seal, or mixed-material lid. There is no single rule for every design and facility.
Can black plastic be recycled?
The resin may be technically recyclable, but conventional carbon-black pigment can be hard for some NIR sorters to detect. Local acceptance and the color technology control the practical answer. Buyers should test sortability.
What if a plastic item has no number?
Do not guess from appearance, flexibility, or color. Search the local guide by item type or ask the manufacturer or waste provider. No code does not automatically mean recyclable or non-recyclable.
Does the triangle mean recycled content?
No. A resin identification symbol describes a broad material category. Recycled content is a separate claim about material inputs, while recyclability is a separate claim about end-of-use recovery.

Review the whole container before approving a recycling claim
Send your target market, container drawing, resin and components, decoration, closure, color, product residue, claim copy, and intended disposal route. Honokage can discuss the packaging construction; final recyclability and claim approval must follow the applicable market and recovery system.
