Microwave energy is absorbed mainly by food. FDA explains that microwaves pass through materials such as glass, paper, ceramic, and many plastics, while the food becomes hot. The hot food, oil, syrup, and steam then transfer heat into the cup. This is why some plastic containers can melt even though the microwave energy is not heating the plastic in the same way it heats the food.
