What Is In-Mold Labeling?

The decorated container leaves the mold without needing a separate pressure-sensitive or glued label application step.
The In-Mold Decorating Association describes IML and related in-mold decoration methods as part of the molding cycle, producing a decorated part at the end of that cycle. Labels are commonly selected from the same or a similar resin family as the molded part. Properly specified IML graphics can perform well under condensation, refrigerated handling, stacking, transport, and normal retail abrasion. Durability still depends on label construction, ink, surface finish, resin compatibility, geometry, and process control, so testing should reflect the real distribution environment.

IML supports detailed imagery, fine typography, gradients, strong color systems, matte or gloss effects, and broad decoration around a container. A PP cup combined with a compatible PP-based IML label may support a simpler material structure than a container carrying a materially incompatible label. This can help design-for-recycling work, but it is not a universal recyclability guarantee. What IML Does Not Prove by Itself
IML does not automatically extend shelf life. Shelf life depends on the food formulation, hygiene, filling process, barrier requirements, headspace, seal integrity, closure, storage temperature, distribution, and consumer handling. An IML label may be part of a robust container, but decoration is not a replacement for filled-product shelf-life validation.
IML is not an anti-counterfeit system on its own. Integrated graphics may be harder to replace casually than a loose label, but genuine security requires defined features and verification. Serialized codes, controlled data, forensic markers, digital authentication, and supply-chain controls may be appropriate depending on risk. Do not describe ordinary IML decoration as tamper evidence or authentication without supporting design features.
IML does not guarantee profitability. It may be economically attractive at suitable volumes, especially when automation replaces downstream decoration. IML does not make every container recyclable everywhere. Regulation (EU) 2025/40 emphasizes design for material recycling as well as collection, sorting, and recycling at scale. Claims need to reflect the complete package and the market where it becomes waste.
How the Injection IML Process Works
First, the label is printed, finished, die-cut, and checked for dimensions and print quality. A robotic system picks the label and places it accurately inside the open mold. Static charge or another retaining method keeps the label against the cavity surface. The mold closes, molten plastic is injected, and the label integrates with the part while the container forms and cools.
After ejection, the container can be inspected automatically or manually for label placement, wrinkles, bubbles, color, print defects, short shots, flash, deformation, dimensions, and rim quality. Containers are then stacked and packed in a controlled manner. IML is well suited to retail products that need strong shelf communication, durable decoration, and repeatable high-volume production.
